EDUCATION IN HAITI

On a national average only about 60% of Haitian children between 6 and 11 are enrolled in school. In the rural areas only about half of the children have the opportunity to start in primary school. The Haitian government has failed in its obligation to offer education free of charge as is stated in its constitution. More than 90% of the schools are non-public, with most of them not receiving any state support. For some families sending all, or even one, of their children to school is simply out of economic reach.

  • About 500,000 children in Haiti are not in school
  • 85% of teachers lack basic qualifications
  • 60% of the population of Haiti can read and write
  • 78% of students drop out after Primary School
  • 5% of students graduate High School
  • 1% of students attend Universities

LaChapelle Schools

LaChapelle is a community of about 50,000 people in the Abritonite Department of Haiti. There are about 24 private schools in LaChapelle—some are faith based, many are not. The  photos below are actual private schools in LaChapelle. These images do not comply with anything we might imagine as an acceptable school structure for children.  Most of the private schools charge tuition that ranges from $100 to $200 USD annually, plus the cost of uniforms, shoes, supplies and exams. There are a few private schools that charge a significantly higher tuition than this.

The schools are located throughout the Community of LaChapelle so the children can walk to school.

Despite the number of school locations, many, many children in LaChapelle do not attend school. Their parents simply cannot pay the tuition required. Average unemployment in Haiti is about 70%. In the rural areas like LaChapelle is it even higher. The primary occupation in LaChapelle is agriculture. If a parent is working, perhaps as a laborer during planting or harvesting, his/her salary is about $2/day. It is nearly impossible to send your children to school if this is your income level.

HEPI’s way of supporting education in LaChapelle is our Sponsor a Child Program. HEPI works closesly with a local organization of young men known as OJEM. Beginning in April, OJEM will compile a list of all the children in LaChapelle who will likely not be able to attend school because of the family’s inability to pay tuition. We know there will be hundreds of children on this list. HEPI’s goal is to see every child in LaChapelle in School.

Sponsor The Education Of A Haitian Child

HEPI’s goals are to help every child in LaChapelle attend school and to change the culture in the community to recognize the importance of children attending school beyond 6th grade.
